Pilates for the Core

Laurie Beck has been practicing the discipline of Pilates for 22 years, beginning in Atlanta when she was 30 years old.
"I had one session and knew that's what my body needed," remembers Beck. "My first experience was euphoric. I loved how it makes me feel."
Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. He called his method "contrology." It is practiced worldwide, and studies show the practice might help condition abdominal muscles and alleviate lower back pain.
At the time Beck discovered Pilates, she was actively teaching and training horses resulting in neck and lower-back issues. She went to a gym, did exercises, and worked with a trainer, but nothing alleviated her pain.
"After I took lessons in Pilates for a year, all my pain dissipated. What I needed was safe moves that were controlled and assisted by the reformer bed, which makes it easy to see on the machines if you're off. The reformer bed assists and resists you, and focuses on your core. Any moves come from breathing and the core," she explained.
Thirteen years ago Beck opened her first Pilates studio in Atlanta. Three years later, on March 31, 2006, she was told she had non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Coming up on her 10-year anniversary of that diagnosis, Beck believes Pilates played a big factor in her healing.
"It taught me breath work, which calms and creates energy. And, a blessing was I had amazing clientele. By helping others, it motivated me," she said.
Beck was trained in the discipline by a master Pilates teacher and has earned many hours of certifications, including scoliosis workshops, keeping her at the forefront in her discipline.
Today, she is joined in her studio by a second generation, her son, Nick, who is also certified and has been teaching for two years.
"He was in the studio with me for 10 years listening to me train, so, it came naturally to him," said Beck. "And, he was blessed to work with people who have trained all over the world."
Beck said 90 percent of her clientele already have an issue in their body when they come to her, such as lower back, neck, or hip pain. "I can guide them and help them heal," she said.
Beck's studio, Pilates By The Sea, is located at Sandestin Fitness Center across from Linkside Center on the bay side. She also teaches private sessions in people's homes.
Her studio is open Monday through Saturday by appointment, and she trains every hour on the hour from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays, and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other times are available by appointment. She can be found on Facebook under Pilates by the Sea, along with contact information, or call Sandestin Fitness Center at 267-6464.
